Villazón Requires Surgery; Tenor Likely Out for Most of the Year
It seems that Eyebrows himself is to have surgery to remove a vocal cord cyst.
Rolando Villazón is reported to have cancelled everything for 2009.
My initial reaction was sadness - not least because I have a ticket for and was looking forward to his recital at Covent Garden in June.
On reflection I am hoping that this is actually good news. He's cancelled a lot and been in reported vocal trouble for some months. There has been way too much talk on the internet of catastrophe, involving all sorts of burn out, career apocalypse scenarios and general nastiness.
I would guess that something like a vocal cord cyst is beyond nightmare for a singer and wouldn't contribute to peace of mind. It must be pretty scary, though. For a tenor, having vocal cord surgery must be like brain surgery for the rest of us (just kidding! Rolando does not have the intelligence of a tenor!)
Hopefully, the surgery and the ensuing rest, and perhaps an element of re-learning, will mean that he's back and raring to go and it won't be so long before we get the full-on Rolando experience again - Manon, I think, at ROH, for Londoners.
