The Classic FM Gramophone Awards 2006
Is Canadian Gerald Finley in danger of being taken for granted? His fame does not begin to approach that of the other great bass-baritone of the day, Bryn Terfel. But again and again Finley delivers. It was no small task to take on the memory of Benjamin Luxon's classic 1982 Stanford sea songs but his new version is a triumph. Finley's laser-like precision and swashbuckling swagger (though he doesn't neglect the quieter songs) confirmed that not only is he a marvellous artist but he has as much star quality as anyone. His recent disc of Ives songs had Gramophone's critic remarking that if he is not by this time universally recognised as a singer of the front rank, this should leave no doubt of it.
Except that he's not a bass-baritone...
