An album I have from the EMI Classics 'Heroes' series. I have to say, he's no hero of mine, but I picked this disc up for a song, largely to hear why so many people on opera newsgroups rave about him.
After listening to this I am none the wiser. Oh, sure, he's good. But there's plenty of good tenors performing now. I don't want just 'good' in my collection. I want 'great', I want something that hits me in the emotions. The nearest that I get to that with this is in Di quella pira from Trovatore, but it's not the best Di quella pira I have in my collection. I can't for the minute think what is, maybe I should do a competitive aria playing session of Di quella pira.
Unfortunately, whilst I was playing this, my other half emerged from the spare room and started going on about "What a beautiful voice! Oh I wish I could sing with my heart!" de gustibus Besides, he was drunk...
And Corelli had a lisp...
