Stupid wanker writing on the tax benefits of marriage.
The wording is pretty outrageous:
The problem is that governments, of whichever party, decided many years ago that we should have all taxpayers treated separately for tax purposes.Hence the principle which existed in the past, that the husband and wife were a single taxable entity, has been systematically dismantled.
This makes me so angry, this sort of attitude which made me very anti-marriage when I was anti-marriage, now that I am engaged, makes me want to push against the smug arrogance of tossers like this. People get married for all sorts of reasons - I've had friends marry because of pregnancy, immigration, desire for an ostentatious 'big day', work, romance, whatever.
Good, people make all sorts of life choices for all sorts of reasons. What I can't stand is when people try to claim a moral superiority because they have made a pragmatic choice.
What this article fails to even address is why there should be any tax-advantage in being married. Surely any tax allowances should be for those supporting children or dependent adults. (Are there any tax allowances for those caring for aged parents?)
