Viñales valley in the Pinar del Rio province is a Cuban National Monument and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Before European settlement, the area was the home of a remnant Taíno population swelled with runaway slaves.
We visited in December 2001, enjoying the mogotes or rocky outcrops, formed by rocks such as limestone dissolving around them.
