As it happens, I am listening to Iphigénie en Tauride as I write. I am yet to be convinced that it is totally in the top drawer of operas in general, but I do firmly believe that Act II stands up as good as any individual act in the entire opera cannon. All three main characters have extended virtuoso passages, the chorus gets a fair crack, and the orchestra is, at times, totally manic, and, always, amazingly written.
