Tito Beltrán found guilty of rape and sentenced to two years in jail
From my point of view, two years doesn't seem anything like long enough. But I do realise that sentences differ between countries with no real logic to support either longer or shorter sentences. I think for a lot of people even to experience one night in prison is enough of a wake-up call. And a crime such as rape is strange. In a sense simply to be named as a rapist is a massive punishment, especially for someone with a career and a reputation (of sorts - he was pretty rubbish in Boheme at Covent Garden; OTOH, there is a West End restaurant that gives him iconic status, bizarrely...). But there appear to be rumours around that the offence for which he was convicted is allegedly not an isolated incident; he was acquitted last year of child sex abuse, a verdict which the authorities indicated an intention to appeal; there are other unsubstantiated rumours. If someone is a compulsive sexual abuser, no length of jail term will change that compulsion, but does serve to protect society.
Nasty man.
