Innocence lost on BBC1 viewers
It was meant to be the young and vibrant drama series to catch the all-important youth audience and be the hit of the autumn
"All-important?" Why? We are repeatedly being told that we have an ageing population, that 'young people' are as likely to watch DVDs or webcontent as TV, and it's not like the BBC needs the impressionable "young" to sell adverts to.
- Has 22.5 per cent of the audience share
- Costume dramas Bleak House and Jane Eyre, and drama series Life on Mars
- Returned Panorama to prime-time slot.
If "Young People" are incapable of watching - and enjoying - Bleak House, Jane Eyre, and Life on Mars, so what? I'm sure that, in actual fact, many 'young people' did watch those programmes, and do watch Football, Have I Got News For You, Planet Earth, Strictly Come Dancing etc. And I'm sure many more watch Coast, Simon Shama on Art, Catherine Tate and Never Mind the Buzzcocks.
Young people will start watching TV when their energy levels run out, or when they settle down into relationships, with children, or when they find that housing costs prohibit 'going out'. Meanwhile, can us grown-ups have more telly for us, please.
