I loved Kaz (and Kev's) comments on race issues in Holland and Argentina. I could see that conversation happening in Gert Cottage.
But the quote of the week has to be an acquaintance/customer of Jimmy.
"England will do very well in the next match; Portugal will only have nine players..."
Jimmy tried to explain that they can use a couple of other players to replace those sent-off in that extraordinary display of incompetent refereeing on Sunday. But Tess was insistent she knew what what was what. They've even got a bet going. Jimmy says Portugal will start with 11; Tess says 9. Who will win the bet?
He had another bet last night - France to win 2-1. If Zidane hadn't scored that late goal we would have been fifty quid up.
When he bets, I'm awkward and go against it, so I was really cheering Spain on. But they were dismal. Almost as dismal as England. As for Brazil, they're going to win this Bloody Thing and piss everybody off in the process. Ghana played attractive football. Brazil found the net. I think I'm going to cheer for Argentina. And thank god I missed the Switzerland Ukraine match - except for the bit where the pundits said the first half was the most boring game they had ever seen, but the second half was worse.
It's not exactly shaping up to be the most exciting World Cup ever. Am I looking back to 1982 through rose-tinted specs to an age of youthful naivety? But that was one bloody good tournament!
