...but has not given up the role, according to Playbill Arts
Plácido Domingo has cancelled an upcoming appearance as Parsifal in Zurich, his representative Edgar Vincent confirmed. But Vincent denied that the tenor has dropped the role from his repertoire, as indicated in a statement from Zurich Opera. In announcing Domingo's cancellation on its web site, the company said that Domingo had "decided to remove the role of Parsifal immediately from his repertoire."
Vincent said that Domingo will sing the role as scheduled with Hamburg Opera in 2007.
Vincent told PlaybillArts that Domingo was forced to cancel the April 23 gala performance in Zurich due to his recent bout of tracheitis. "He was silent for three months, which is the longest period he stopped singing in a 40-year career. He is following his doctor's advice not to overdo it."
Domingo was to appear in the closing night of the production, which starts on April 13 with Jonas Kaufmann in the title role.
