A Triptych With Two Leading Men at the Met's Opening
Then came Act III of "Samson" with the ageless Plácido Domingo in the title role. Of late Mr. Domingo has been dropping hints about retiring as a singer. Yet here he is at 64, sounding remarkable. In the opening scene, when the blinded Samson, chained to a mill, pours out his anguish, Mr. Domingo sang with amazing ardor, poignancy, insight and plenty of power. Many tenors half his age would covet sounding half as good. As Dalila, the mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves, was not at her best. Yet despite some shaky moments, her phrases rang true when it mattered, and as always, she looked gorgeous.
For those keeping score, this was the 21st opening night at the Met with Mr. Domingo participating. In second place, at 17, is Enrico Caruso, and no contenders on the scene seem likely to have Mr. Domingos longevity and prominence in the company.
Some Welsh geezer also sung.
