Channel 4 did the Top 100 albums of all time ever and totally objective last week.
I hate that sort of thing with a vengeance. It's fundamentally a transient product, voted on by transient people with transient tastes. It demonstrates nothing and proves even less. Top is Radiohead. Really? So, what age group was consulted? If a proper statistically valid sample of the population was consulted, Cliff Richard might end up top. But that wouldn't do, would it. Just not hip enough.
But, for the sake of utter anoraknacy, I have the following
2. U2 - The Joshua Tree
5. PINK FLOYD - Dark Side of the Moon
6. OASIS - Definitely Maybe
7. THE BEATLES - Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
8. MADONNA - Like a Prayer
10. THE BEATLES - Revolver
11. R.E.M. - Automatic for the People
12. THE BEATLES - The White Album
15. OASIS - (What's the Story) Morning Glory
16. ALANIS MORISSETTE - Jagged Little Pill
18. THE VERVE - Urban Hymns
39. THE WHITE STRIPES - Elephant
47. DIRE STRAITS - Brothers in Arms
51. HAPPY MONDAYS - Pills 'N' Thrills and Bellyaches
70.PULP - Different Class
79.GEORGE MICHAEL - Faith
84.PAUL SIMON - Graceland
86. MEAT LOAF - Bat Out of Hell
91. ROBBIE WILLIAMS - I've Been Expecting You
And of the ones I have deleted, I have albums by about half of the artists, just not that particular album.
In a U-turn and a massive backflip I express surprise at a surprisingly eclectic mix of albums representing more or less every taste in pop music. Not necessarily all to my taste, and certainly not what I'd use to compile a personal top one hundred. But a superb example that that the mass collective sometimes has a amazing skill for determining on aggregate what is right.
