To work or not to work is a vexed question for families
I think what they want to say is 'To work or not to work is a vexed question for mothers* of young children
* or fathers in those frequent enough circumstances where the female partner is the higher earner.
In my experience, work is not done by 'families'. On the other hand, most people I know are part of a family. For very many their family - partners, parents, siblings, adult offspring etc - has little or no impact upon their career/job decisions.
It seems that the word 'family' now has a specific meaning of 'young children'.
Has anyone informed the Oxford English Dictionary?
