I was at the Barbican this evening. At the bar, just getting myself a bottle of water (I kid you not). Who should I see propping up the bar but Karl Jenkins? Not that surprising, considering that he was premiering a new composition.
I walked over to join the queue at the door for my allotted seat, and who should I see but Jane Wymark, who plays Joyce Barnaby in Midsomer Murders. Uh-oh, I thought, will the evening pass without a few dead bodies?
I was standing in the queue, just behind two couples each of which had someone with a stick, so I had to wait to make my descent. Who was stood right next to me, but Karl Jenkins. I kind of turned away, which is terribly terribly rude of me, but I wasn't sure what I was supposed to do or say. Stare furiously, because he's famous - and very recognisable with that unfeasible moustache. Or say "Oh my! I am so priviliged to meet you. I so loved The Armed Man."
I'm okay with chance encounters with celebs, because I usually say Hello before I realise it's a celebrity. But this wasn't really a chance encounter, because he was on duty. I suppose when I saw him at the interval I could have gone up, shook his hand, said "Love the piece" but I just think that is so naff.
But, AFAIK, there were not any dead bodies.
