This programme has been on BBC2 for the past few weeks, on Saturday night, but is now finished. I am surprised that the BBC does not provide a website in support of it. Or perhaps I am not so surprised.
I had ringed it in the Radio Times. Jimmy was not enthusiastic, but joined me in watching it, for want of anything else. And he loved it as much as me. He had thought it was some tourist hard-sell programme.
Instead, it was a history of the city of Venice, focusing, of course, on srt and architecture, but also covering Venice's place in the world, the evolution of society, civil engineering.
The presenter, Francesco da Mosto, was a treasure. PErfect, but accented, English. A Venetian for a thousand years, he cared deeply about his city, yet managed to present in a non-chauvinist way.
I'm sure it will be repeated in due course, and if you didn't see it, I would recommend that you do.
It's that sort of programme that makes me love the BBC
