A radio one DJ asks Why are you all so f*****g rude?
Very good question. I often snigger silently at the surly who bark out orders with contempt for those serving. I'm usually pleasant to serving people. Why?
Pure selfishness.
If I smile at a checkout assistant, they often smile back, which lifts my spirits. No, actually, smiling lifts my spirits.
When I establish a relationship with staff who regularly serve me, little favours get returned.
The other day a woman and I were both getting off the bus and inadvertently made a move at the same time, bumping into each other. Our eyes met. Together we both smiled, connected in a conspiracy to acknowledge our mutual clumsiness. We could have challenged each other, blamed each other, felt angry. But we just connected and it was a beautiful moment.
