I can never take the Doors entirely seriously due to a flippant comment from a friend, Andrew. We were in transit, and heard an announcement "Stan Clear, of The Doors." Andrew frowned and said he didn't remember Stan from the film.
The Doors are a must have for people of a certain age. I think I taped "The Best of..." from my brother-in-law. It might have been from my brother, who in his teens displayed some worrying tendencies towards music ten years too old for him.
There's not a bad song on the album; some of them are indeed very good.
But strangely not one of them moves me emotionally. Partly because this is Found Music from adulthood, not evocative Music osmosed from childhood. But, surely, great music should speak regardless of context? Which suggests therefore, that despite the iconic status of Jim Morrison and despite Fifty Quid Man viewing The Doors as Vital to The Collection, they are Second Rate. First Class Second Rate. But not immortal.
Fave tracks are: Break On Through; Alabama Song; LA Woman; Riders on the Storm.
Well, I say favourite but at least two of them go on for at least two minutes too long.
