It's funny how most of that generation of comedians have trasformed into washed-up has-beens or else are producing safe, unchallenging cosy comedy for the 35-55 age group. Yet Stephen Fry just keeps being himself, a little bit of National Treasure here, a little bit of eccentric there.
He refers to when Tchaikovsky got his honorary degree from Cambridge:
he wasn't the only composer being honoured at that June ceremony - he was in good company. Saint-Sa�ns and Bruch were also getting degrees, and the three of them got together to give a small concert the night before. Just imagine that.
I only just found out the other day that Saint-Sa�ns was homosexual. I wonder if the powers-that-were at Cambridge had any idea they were honouring two homosexual composers in one ceremony...
