You know, it worries me sometimes. There was a period of life, roughly 1993-98, when I had absolutely no clue what was going on in the outside world. My head was entirely up the arse of Lambeth Politics/UK Electoral Politics, and my only external diversion was following the fortunes of Manchester United. I absolutely have no recall of Deng's death; there are cataclysmic world events that passed over my head.
At least when I resigned from a particular job* I was able to look around a little bit and notice that there was a world out there. Even so, it's scary that I rarely watched the news on the telly for about ten years, except for one six week period of 'resting' and one four monh period of semi-unemployment.
It's like a lost weekend that lasted for a decade.
So when I saw a Photo Gallery| Deng centenary, I immediately thought, "Blimey, he's old..."
What other famous people died between 1993 and 1999?
* the sort of job where you were expected to have no existence outside that organisation; a job that would expect you to go away from home for days on end at the drop of a hat. No wonder I rarely attended any cultural events 1989-1998 - what's the point of booking tickets you'll probably have to return or sell on?
