Catherine Bennett test drives two 'SUV's My car's bigger than yours. And points out that
in a collision, pedestrians are 75% more likely to be killed by an SUV than by a conventional vehicle.
Back in January, when it began to snow, I made some acerbic comment that all the 4x4 drivers will be coming into their own. One colleague, who is very sweet, but very naive, said entirely sincerely that 4x4s are ideal for snowy conditions - remember I work in London, not an Alpine region. Another colleague, whose father lives in the Pennine region between Hyde and Saddleworth, spluttered in incredulity, seeing no purpose for a 4x4 in a city.
When my brother was doing night calls to remote farming communities in East Yorkshire (I call him 'Veterinary' but he doesn't really remember 'All Creatures Great and Small' from the TV), and when he was following the jockeys round the course at Beverley races, he appreciated a 4x4. And also recognises the hilarity of them on the school run in the lowlands.
