I studied Soviet and East European Politics at Uni. It was slightly bizarre, not to mention a massive misjudgement, to study in 1987-8 and defer the exam to 1989. I should really have followed developments in the former Soviet Union during the 1990s. It's always fascinated me, because when I was a small child my cousin/godfather lived in Baku. But I'm realising increasingly that, however wonderful my eight years on the Council were, they did lead me to neglect so many other interests in life...
