I totally agree with the thrust of this rant against the cynical packaging of third-rate songs, books and films as For Women. I am a woman, and if someone can come up with a package that includes Shawshank Redemption, The Sound of Music, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade into a coherent "For Gert" package - these being my favourite all-time films - I would question their sanity.
Women are not homogenous. Unfortunately, although I want to agree with the rant, it has one fundamental flaw: the marketing people generally get it right - they would not be doing these packages if they didn't sell. I could be contemptuous of people who are susceptible to marketing packaging. but I only have to look at my over-large collection of compilation CDs, pop and classical, to realise that I, too, am susceptible to packaging.
