Ken asks: "What on earth were you doing awake and computering at 2.21am?"
I had already been to bed and found it impossible to sleep, despite having the sash window entirely open. I am not known for insomnia. High coffee intake aside, I normally fall asleep within minutes of turning the light off, and have been known to sleep through thunder storms (window open) and burglary.
The London Sleep Clinic has had a massive increase in enquiries this week, according to the BBC Regional News programme last night.
Living in a temperate Northern European climate we are not geared up to extremes of temperature. When my Aunt lived on Long Island, NY, she would change her curtains according to the seasons. Many of her friends had carpets they would take up in the summer and lay down in the winter. I know of no air-conditioned house or flat in England. Long time residents of this isle, such as myself, lack the capability to adjust our pace to hot weather. The urban heat is especially oppressive - I know our Moroccan cleaners and some Caribbean-born people are finding it way too hot.
