Okay, not until 2008, but I am gutted, devastated.
Sure, I knew it was going to happen eventually, and I'm sure that he will carry on conducting after that.
But when I read this news, I just felt like I had received a punch in the solar plexus. And I told my cruel, cruel fiancé who laughed and sniggered (he's jealous...), and then told me my tea was ready, so I couldn't even get on here to blog.
Twenty four years I have been a fan. Since Christmas Day 1980. The person who showed me that opera wasn't just some boring thing that my parents were into. The person who has, over the years, taught me more about opera than I am capable of learning.
Less than six weeks till I see him in Dublin...
And the lovely Ricardo on Parlour of pera Lovers (Yahoo Group) has helpfully provided a translation...
El Universal:
Spanish tenor Placido Domingo plans to retire in 2008 if his voice still permits him. This is to coincide with the forty anniversary of his debut at the MET.
The 64 years old tenor is going to sing Parsifal at Barcelona's Liceu after 15 years without singing in this venue.
Domingo says he has operatic projects for the following three years, until 2008. He doesn't want to accept more projects beyond that because as he says "One has to have a little bit of prudence", "Barcelona evokes many memories on me...my children were raised in this city"
For Domingo, Parsifal(to outrage Tom)is one of the great wagnerian roles. "He starts being a savage and then has to learn all in life. He grows in front of our eyes... I have the opportunity not only to sing but to act in public"
Parsifal represents a great physical effort. He has been able to cope with this matter because he is in reasonable good shape "I played football for many years".
