This is the only Elton John album I own. I have it on vinyl. I remember clearly when I got it - it was in 1990, and I was so anxious to play it that i didn't bother watching George Best on a mid-evening chat show. Wogan? Parky? The famous one when he was very very drunk and abusive.
There are, of course, at least two Elton Johns. there is the one who has sung - and performed - a vast number of very good songs over a long period of time. And then there's the Celebrity Legend Sir ELton John who is now a Pastiche Parody of something-or-other, and time to say Basta. (Although I did find his comments on Madonna's lip-synching rather amusing...)
This really isn't his best album, nor are the songs among his best. It is nevertheless a decent album that withstands repeat playing, although not when Himself who hates Elton John is home. Some of the tracks are stronger than others, none is so dire it has to be skipped, but, in the final analysis, only one - Sacrifice - is worthy of the best of ELton John. What I like most about Sacrifice is the melodic tune. The words are nothing special, and I have never felt Elton's voice to be his strong point.
