Just lumped together for alphabetical convenience. Too very different composers, and both under-represented in my collection, although Tchaik features heavily on compilation discs.
The Tavener I have is the Akathist of Thanksgiving. I bought it almost exclusively for the organist. Who, of course, is good but does not feature prominently. I have decidedly mixed feelings about the piece as a whole. It's lovely, sometimes really quite gorgeous, but I'm left feeling is that it? It's good background music- meditation, worship perhaps - but I am not sure that repeated listenings would derive any greater profundity from the music itself. Of course I am entirely missing the point, but, on my blog, that's my prerogative...!
I also have somewhat mixed feelings about Tchaik. I very much enjoy his orchestral, and, of course, ballet music, but I just can't get into his operas. But when I say I 'very much enjoy' I don't mean that I get emotionally involved or moved by them. Nice tunes, though, especially the Capriccio Italien.
