A moving feature in The Independent, echoing a similar piece in one of the glossy mags.
Malcolm Arnold's Scottish Dances - which are great, fun pieces, especially the drunken bassoon - were one of the six set works on my O-Level syllabus. The one and only time I have ever heard one of his pieces in concert was the special exam concert arranged by Youth and Music and played by the (then) BBC Northern Symphony Orchestra.
And the only version I have of Scottish Dances is on a 'taped off the radio' tape, even though I taped it off school's record. So I don't play it very often...
I look forward with interest to the South Bank Show two-parter, September 26 and October 3. Tony Palmer is an excellent film maker.
