The 1980s. Being a teenager. Being a tortured intellectual soul-searching teenager. Who better to speak for us than Morrissey - the fan who became a star?
It was slightly strange, actually. The Smiths were our local band. Morrissey grew up on the same road as my brother-in-law, went to the same primary school as b-in-l, and Mother, and the same primary and secondary schools as my uncle. Mike Joyce lived next door to an elderly couple that Jane 'did' for in her year out before studying Occupational Therapy. Michelle's neighbour had been Andy Rourke's dinner lady at All Saints school. Andy did the same job as my sister, leaving before she started. Steph used to chat to Morrissey in the front garden of his exclusive pop star pad in Hale.
What a shock to reach University and realise that our local band, that everybody 'knew', were absolute gods and idols to the rest of our generation!
