the two main red-tops both carry stories of murdered toddlers - Mum's Hit and Run Grief and Trucker fled as tot died. If they had been killed by paedophiles, this would be front page news, and Page 2, 3, 5, 5, 6, 7, 13, 14, 15, and an Editorial. The killers, rightly, would become infamous and be villified. Indignant mobs would firebomb the homes of paediatricians.
But let's not villify killer drivers. Let's protect their rights to speed, because it's such a basic human right. Man and machine in perfect harmony. Let's not install traffic calming or speed cameras, because they infringe the sacred rights of the holy motorists.
Of course, if I were to suggest that education and health organisations abolish criminal record and character checks, and don't take up references, because it infringes the employment rights of decent law-abiding teachers and nurses, I would be villified - and rightly so.
But nothing must infringe the right of a testosterone-fuelled driver to kill and maim cruise the open residential road.
