Checkpoint Charlie
Strange place. Once it marked the crossing point from the US to USSR sectors of a divided occupied city. Now it is surrounded by snackfood and tacky souvenir shops.
Made me dispirited about the tourism industry. I wondered what proportion of the people visiting have more than the slightest clue about the history of post-World War II Germany, and how many even care. Another site to tick off on the Great Sightseeing List for the not-so Grand Tour.
